Ava is located in the heart of the hills of southwest
Missouri. All roads leading to this small, clean town have been designated as state scenic
highways. State Highway 5 cuts through Ava from north to south going on south to the lake
country and Arkansas, a mere stones throw away. State Highways 14 and 76 merge in Ava from
the east and west traveling through some of the most picturesque scenery in the United
States. Highway 76 is also a direct route to Branson, only 55 miles away.
CLIMATE: One of the nicest things about Ava is the climate. Located atop the Ozark
Mountain Plateau, it enjoys a definite four season climate with much milder temperatures
than the upland plains or prairie sections of the state. Ava enjoys an abundance of
sunshine, low wind velocity, mild temperatures and favorable humidity. Ava temperature
ranges: Spring 46-83, Summer 59-97, Fall 38-55, Winter 24-55. Just a great place to be.
POPULATION: Ava's climate and low cost of living makes it a most desirable place to
live. The population of 2,976 in town residents and nearly 12,000 county residents
encourages many small business, therefore most services found in much more populated areas
are found here also.
UTILITIES: Ava owns and operates its own water and electric systems,
thereby offering much lower utility rates in comparison to other
communities of like size. The county area is served by the White River
Valley Electric Co-Op for electricity and by individually dug wells for
water. The topography of the area produces many clear, cool springs thus creating a spring
like source of water for the individual family well. Propane gas and heating oil are
available from local private companies. The city also has natural gas available.
SCHOOLS: Douglas County is blessed with excellent educational
opportunities. The local school system is rated AAA by the state. There are two elementary
schools located in the rural areas. Higher education is available from several major
universities (located in Springfield).
Locally, Ozark Technical College and Drury College offer courses in our
community. There are also private schools available.
GOVERNMENT:The City government is composed of a mayor and four council members. The
county has a system of commissioners with the presiding commissioner controlling the
county government with the assistance of an eastern area and western area commissioner and
the other usual elected officials such as: assessor, clerk, recorder, collector,
treasurer, etc.
LAW & FIRE PROTECTION: The city of Ava has a police chief and several officers
providing excellent protection in our community. The city also provides fire protection
with a fire chief and several volunteer firefighters/first responders. The county has an
elected sheriff with several deputies assisting him.
EMPLOYMENT:Ava nestles in the heart of the cow/calf growing center of Missouri.
Missouri now ranks as the second state in the cattle producing business with dairying not
far behind. Douglas County produces its share. Agriculture is a very important industry in
the Ozarks. Ava is also blessed with several light industries as follows: Copeland
Corporation, Rawlings Manufacturing Co., and Hagale Industries. Other major employers are:
Heath & Son Feed & Supply, Ava R-1 School District, Heart of the Ozarks Health
Care Center, Wal-Mart, Town & Country Supermarket and McDonald's. RECREATION: Ava and
Douglas County sit in the middle of a most diverse recreational area. For the hunter and
fisherman there are few places with equal opportunities. There are deer, turkeys,
squirrels, raccoon, rabbits
and other small game in the lush woodlands and meadows. The streams of the are sandy
bottomed with crystal clear water. Trout, black bass, sunfish, crappie and all forms of
stream animals abound. Just 30 minutes south of Ava is one of the premier bass fishing
lakes in the country. This lake has many large open areas inviting boating, water skiing
and all other water sports. Bucks and Spurs Guest Ranch is a new facility in our area,
offering family vacations, executive retreats, hunting, fishing and guide service. The
newly remodeled Lodge offers comfortable, yet rustic accommodations and red cedar cabin.
Ava has a bowling alley with very competitive leagues year round. There is a private
country club with golf course. The city of Ava Parks & Recreation Department offers
spring and fall soccer, summer little league baseball and swim team. The parks also offer
a beautiful swimming pool and tennis courts along with pavilions, playground equipment and
a newly constructed lighted walking trail. A recent grant provided the planting of over 80
new trees throughout the park.
COMMUNICATIONS: There is one AM./FM radio station in Ava along with one weekly
newspaper. Douglas County is closely related to the Springfield area and is serviced by
several T.V. stations and a daily newspaper. Cable T.V is available in the city limits.
Internet services are provided by Greater Ozarks Information Network and public access
stations are available at the Douglas County Public Library, Ava Community Center and the
Ava Area Chamber of Commerce office. These access stations are provided free of charge to
the community.
CHURCHES: Churches of all denominations are readily available. Many small, community type
churches dot the area. These churches, having been established early in the century,
attest to the determination and
perseverance of the population.
